A 10-year-old boy from North Salem Elementary School was struck by the bicyclists while exiting the school bus with several other students in the 2600 block of West Canal Road around 4 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28, according to the release by the Northern York County Regional Police Department on June 4.

The police noted the following about the incident:

"The school bus was eastbound on W. Canal Rd. and had stopped with its red lights illuminated and its stop arm activated. The bicyclist was also eastbound on W. Canal Rd. and failed to stop as required for the red lights on a school bus. The student exited the right side of the bus as the bicyclist was overtaking the bus on the right side. The bicyclist struck the student."

The student was knocked to the ground but a woman waiting for her child to get off the bus rushed over to help the child, who suffered, "various scrapes and cuts to his body; he did not need medical attention," the police explained.

The bicyclist was able to stay upright but did "check on the welfare of the child," according to the police release, but "the struck child was obviously distraught and walked away from the bicyclist."

The police are searching for the bicyclist as he failed to contact the police, school district, or the bus transportation company to report the crash.

If you can identify the bicyclist, contact the Northern York County Regional Police Department at 717-467-8355 or tips@nycrpd.org. Please reference case number:  2024-022879.
